    Get PDF
This paper discusses a simple technique to identify global models for nonlinear aerodynamic force and moment coefficients of aircraft using multivariate orthogonal functions. Classical Gram-Schmidt procedure and Predicted Squared Error metric are used to generate the orthogonal functions. Global models for the F-16 aircraft are identified from a simplified subsonic (Mach less than 0.6) wind tunnel database available in open literature. The identified models are compared with those found in literature for the same wind tunnel database and conclusions are drawn.

    Get PDF
Introduction: Splenic pseudo-aneurysm is an uncommon complication following splenic injury caused by blunt abdominal trauma. Pseudo-aneurysm is usually treated with splenic arterial embolisation. Spontaneous thrombosis of a splenic pseudo-aneurysm can occur but it is rare. Method: We report a case of spontaneous thrombosis in a post-traumatic splenic pseudo-aneurysm. The patient was managed conservatively as he was haemodynamically stable with a repeat CT scan on the 7th day showing a tubular enhancing structure in the upper pole of the spleen demonstrating the same attenuation value . Conclusion: This case illustrates a spontaneous resolution of splenic pseudo-aneurysm, which is a rare outcome of the condition

The study of consumer behavior towards green products has become a very important research nowadays. Every human being requires a good quality of environment and good health status in order to guarantee a useful life for self and family. The needs for green products in the daily lives of individuals are necessary today. So, a deeper study of the intention to use green products may be a reference to consumers and organizations. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between attitudes, subjective norms, and perceived control behavior with the intention to use. The researcher has distributed a 120 set of questionnaires. Only one set of survey questions unsuccessful return. All 119 of the returned questionnaires could be used for analysis of the study. Among the methods used in this research are independent sample t-test, one- way ANOVA, Pearson correlation and multiple regressions. The results showed that all independent variables are significant and seen have influenced intention to use green products among consumers. Among the three independent variables, the attitude is most influenced intention to use green products because it has the highest regression. This means, the higher the positive attitude of consumers towards green products, the higher their intention to use the product. As a result, retailers and marketers should increase consumers‟ desire to use green products by creating an effective marketing strategy. In addition, other parties such as government and non-governmental organizations should also strive to increase positive attitudes of consumers towards green products. The discussion of the implications and suggestions for future research are also described at the end of the study

Socio-Cultural Gender Norms and Economic Barriers in The Context of Rural High School Girls’ Dropout in Bangladesh: A Qualitative Study

    Get PDF
While attending high schools, in Bangladesh, rural school girls face the pressure of socio-cultural gender norms and the barriers of economic deprivation. This paper aims to analyze the multifaceted connection between gender norms and economic deprivation of families in rural Bangladesh; and how the dynamics of the connection affect high school girls’ opportunities of further education. The paper identifies the major factors that lead girls to drop out of school. In-depth qualitative interview sessions were conducted with 5 rural high school dropout girls. The analysis incorporates both thematic and narrative analyses. The study finds that gender norms, socioeconomic realities, deprivation and poverty work as barriers; and affect girl’s future education by restricting girl’s opportunities and social mobility with the support of discriminatory gender norms and practices. Parents compromise on girls’ education by giving gender norms a priority. Instead of encouraging girls’ future education parents tend to ensure their daughter’s future in an early marriage. Among the financially challenged families, girls’ domestic duties are prioritized over their aspiration of getting education. Most parents are concerned about the sexual security/chastity of their girls, which also force girls to drop out of high schools. Few parents/guardians who encourage and support girls’ education usually take the initiative to bring changes by resisting social norms that obstruct and limit girls’ opportunities. The paper concludes that in the context of persistent socio-cultural gender norms, resistance against regressive gender ideologies and social norms are needed to bring positive changes in gender socialization

Effectiveness of tenofovir/emtricitabine versus zidovudine/lamivudine in combination with efavirenz in antiretro viral-naive HIV infected patients / Siti Mahanim Shaik Ismail

Durable suppression of replication of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) depends on the use of potent, well-tolerated antiretroviral regimens to which patients can easily adhere. Combination of two NRTIs and one NNRTI is the best first line regimen in treating retroviral disease (RVD) as compared to combinations of other groups. Tenofovir and Zidovudine are the two drugs that mostly use as one of NNRTIs in combination with either Lamivudine or Emtricitabine. Review of previous literature had shown that there were conflicting data on the superiority of either regime based on virologic and immunologic response. A local, retrospective observational cohort study was conducted to evaluate the virological response (primary endpoint), immunological response and the safety profile between TDF and AZT regimens. A total of 154 ART-nai've samples from HTAR and HSB were recruited. No statistically significant differences were observed in HIV RNA suppression at 24 weeks and 48 weeks (p = 0.407 and p = 0.521, respectively). Mean difference in CD4 increments were also not significant (p = 0.54, 95% CI -59.97, 31.83 at week 24; p = 0.68, 95% CI -51.41, 33.59 at week 48). However, AZT was found with more adverse events that leads to discontinuation (p-value <0.001). There were two cases of virological failure in TDF group but the association was not significant (p = 0.497). Only education level was identified as predictor of therapy effectiveness. Although there was no significant difference in virological and immunological responses, TDF still has advantage over AZT because of its better safety profil

Environmental problems cannot be solved by law alone. One of the effective ways to overcome environmental crisis is by developing environmentally literate society. Education is claimed to be the most promising measures in developing any society. Thus, teachers themselves have to be environmentally literate and competent enough in producing informed learners who can make environmentally responsible decisions and portrays environmental responsible behavior. In coherent with the need to produce environmentally literate teachers, Environmental Education course was introduced in the Institutes of Teacher Education in 2001 and was fully implemented by 2003. This aim of this paper is to present the preliminary analysis of cognitive and affective component of environmental literacy of pre-service teachers who have undergone the environmental education course. This preliminary research utilizes quantitative research design. The descriptive survey method was used to gather required information from the respondents. The respondents were 254 pre-service teachers enrolled under post-graduate program from 12 Institute of Teacher Education of Malaysia. The findings were tabulated using descriptive statistics

Keeping Teachers Afloat with Instructional Coaching: Coaching Structure and Implementation

    Get PDF
Despite the press for instructional coaching as a form of effective teacher professional development (TPD), there is still a need to understand what instructional coaching is and how its operations look like. Meanwhile, the coaching literature provides scant guidance particularly about the coaching implementation in the Malaysian context. For the purpose of this study, we explored the processes of instructional coaching in Sarawak, particularly focusing on conceptualising the coaching processes to fine-tune teaching practice. Employing a qualitative case study design, we conducted non-participant observations on coaching conferences of four coach-teacher pairs on a one-to-one basis. We analysed the data obtained using Braun and Clarke’s (2006) six-phase thematic analysis. The findings suggested that the coaching cycle consisted of three stages: pre-observation conference, classroom observation and post-observation conference. An additional stage of intervention was identified in the coaching cycle. Coaching support to the teachers was provided on an average of one session per month. Structuring coaching conversations was a key aspect in conducting coaching support for the teachers. For future research, we offer recommendations of larger-scale studies to discover the impact of instructional coaches that include the intervention component as a part of the coaching cycle to enhance teacher instruction and student achievement. We would also suggest studies based on comprehensive theories and empirical evidences into the development of fully articulated models of instructional coaching related to the Malaysian context
